Historical Background
Our church is a non-denominational, evangelical body of believers, with a focus on reaching the lost for Christ; and strengthening, equipping and training its members to reach their full potential in Christ. Our very name is reflective of our desire to have a unified body of saints - where all are welcome, received, and accepted into the body regardless of their religious or social status.
In 1986 before the fall of the Iron Curtain, Union of Christians Church was started as a small underground Bible study. By divine "coincidence" on Christmas day, December 25th, 1991, our church was one of the first to be officially registered after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
For the next 4 years we were committed to building the relationships between the churches. Therefore, the Association of Christian Churches was established. In 1995 it was officially registered as a centralized religious organization to provide legal and spiritual support to the churches throughout Russia. The Association quite successfully continues it work until this day, and has broadened its range of influence to Russian-speaking churches throughout the world, not just in Russia. However, since 1998 Union of Christian Church and the Association of Christians have become two separate entities, each fulfilling its own particular role and function in the life of the believer.
From 1993-1998 Union of Christian Church conducted a "School of Ministry". Eighty percent of our graduates went into the full-time ministry. They serve the Lord in different regions of Russia and even abroad and are impacting the world for Christ.
In 1994 the need for support and fellowship amongst pastors led to the founding of the St. Petersburg Christian Council, an Interdenominational fellowship of churches and ministries; Pastor Dmitri Poliakoff has served as its chairman from the beginning. The Spirit of God transcends denominational barriers.
1995 saw the start of monthly city prayer meetings. Through the years the responsibility of these meetings passed from church to church, and were sometimes more sporadic then regular. Therefore, since 2000 Pastor Anya Poliakoff assumed the responsibility for the prayer meetings.
The years from 1995-1998 were years of testing and trials; years of growth and victory. In 1998 God fine-tuned our vision - "Declare Jesus Anytime, Anywhere, in any possible way"...to anyone and everyone! In accordance with James 1:27 - "This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father to visit orphans and widows in their distress," - we began our ministry in orphanages and ministry to the elderly.
The Lord showed us how precious our youth are and what a treasure we have in them, yet we had overlooked them. They are not only the future of Russia; they are the present as well. We realized that we needed to focus on and reach out to this New Generation.
In 2003 we became aware of another group of overlooked people, our business people. In 2003 we began reaching out to businessmen by holding a "Breakfast for Champions".
